“In today’s world, God’s children need that same reminder to trust Him when we don’t understand and nothing seems to make sense.”[i] —Anne Graham Lotz

Today’s Verse: “No unbelief or distrust made him [Abraham] waver (doubtingly question) concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and was empowered by faith as he gave praise and glory to God.” (Romans 4:20 AMP)

In troubling times we often find ourselves asking why. We drive ourselves into a frenzy trying to find the answer, and as we do, we are led to dead ends, anger, resentment, bitterness, or feelings of personal defeat.

Rather than trying to answer the why question, it’s best to focus instead on the what. The truth is, there will always be unanswered questions on our individual journeys; and we accomplish nothing when we try to sort through the reasons (the why), the rationale (the how), and the past and future timing (the when). Fixating on those things is contrary to God’s view of how we should spend our time and direct our thoughts and hearts.

Focusing on the why only serves to block the healing Jesus wants to bring. It instead opens the door for the Enemy to mess with our minds. We cannot cling to the pain until we know why we’ve experienced loss because we may never know the answer this side of heaven.

Instead of clinging to the why, we need to focus on the what:

  • God is love (1 John 4:8).
  • Nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38–39).
  • He makes everything beautiful in His time (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
  • God will never leave or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8).
  • God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

These are but a few verses from His Word that we must settle in our hearts and minds so we know where to go when the why begins again to surface and distract us.

PRAYER: Ask God to help you renew your mind to think not on the why, but on the what—His promises in His Word. Pray back the promises to Him and thank Him for each one and how they will sustain and carry you in this season of loss.
